Chippewa Falls is a wonderful city to call home. There is a great history in the area and the city has seen some revitalization efforts in recent years.
The city sits in a great location near major interstates and highways. You're just a short drive to the northern part of Wisconsin, which is wonderful all year round, but especially in the summer months.
Lake Wissota is nearby and Eau Claire is just a short drive to the south. And really the entire Chippewa Valley has become connected over the years with new homes and commercial spaces being built seemingly nonstop.
Have you moved to Chippewa Falls recently?
Here are a few local cleaning tips for getting your new home move-in ready.
Tip #1. Determine Clean vs. Replace
When you're moving into a new home it's likely that just about everything is out of the house. The previous owner likely took all of their stuff with them. And if not it's a good time to order a dumpster and finish the job.
Get everything out and assess the condition. Determine if things like the flooring and carpet are worth cleaning or if it's better to replace. Now is the time to do it.
The same goes for things like the:
Toilets
Tubs
Paint
Lighting fixtures
Etc.
There is never a better time to clean (or replace) than when you first move into a house.
Tip #2. Start At The Top First
It's time to dive in and get the place clean. Maybe the previous owner cleaned. Maybe they had a cleaning service come in and do it for them. Whatever the case you probably want to do a little touching up for your own peace of mind.
Start by dusting the top of the inside of the home first. Reach up as high as you can. Get an extendable pole with a duster attachment on it if you can. Make sure to get all the corners and ceilings fans if they exist in the home. Get all the light fixtures you can reach.
Even if the ceilings aren't that high these high spots are often overlooked and can sometimes be overlooked for years.
Also, by starting at the top you're using gravity to your advantage. You're knocking dust and dirt down to the floor, which you can take care of later.
Start at the ceiling and work your way down. Get the counter-height areas next. Then finally vacuum all the dust, dirt and grime up and then do a good mopping on the floors. Maybe even shampoo the carpets to finish things off.
Tip #3. Look Behind And Underneath
It's also a great time to look behind and underneath hard-to-see areas.
Behind the oven.
Behind the fridge.
Behind the washer and dryer.
You might want to even go behind the furnace in the basement and dig around a little bit.
When all of your future furniture is out of the house it's a great time to check all the nooks and crannies for hidden treasures.
Also take the opportunity to look inside all of the cabinets. Look in all the corners and tricky spots and really see if there is anything you can scrape and wipe clean.
Chances are these have been overlooked for years.
Oh, and another spot is to look high. Above cabinets. Check any shelving that is made for photo frames and nick knacks. There are all kinds of little spots in most houses that could use a little cleaning.
Tip #4. Do Some "Restoration" Work On The Toughest Spots
A few of the spots in the house will require some extra effort. If the home has been lived in this will happen. That's the point of a home. We live our busy lives and things kind of get lost in the shuffle. Especially with kids.
Bathtubs and showers are two big spots for restoration work. Toilets and sinks are another. Chippewa Falls has some hard water if you're not on the city water system. You're likely going to have soap scum build up and hard water stains. Pink, orange and yellow. You've probably seen it.
Get yourself a pumice stone. Wet it down and get to work. Pink Stuff also works well for really hard to remove stains and build up. Magic Eraser sponges also work well. But one these about these sponges is that they are really fine sandpaper. They will scratch surfaces if you're not careful.
Also check the oven. You can usually use a pumice stone on the inside and usually on the grates depending on the type of stove.
Bathrooms and kitchens take a lot of abuse and they've often surface cleaned only for their lifetimes. You can replace some things, but with a little work you can restore them to their initial beauty and appeal.
Tip #5. Scrape Off Stuck-On Gunk
We all know that gunk tends to build up in a house. The surfaces in the bathroom in particular. Toothpaste all over the bathroom (if you have kids). The floors in the kitchen and even the cabinets in the kitchen.
I don't know how kids do it, but they get gunk everywhere.
But it's not just the kids. Cooking in the kitchen usually involves grease and other substances that like to stick to every surface.
Get yourself a Miniscraper. These work great for taking gunk off surfaces. They scrape the gunk without scratching the surface.
Take off the difficult gunk before you vacuum and wipe and mop. This way you can really make sure the surfaces and floors and smooth and clean.
