Summer in Northern Wisconsin has got to be one of the best places and times to experience anywhere in the world.

The weather can be hot, but there is no better place to be on a hot summer day than on the lake. Or at least close by.

Rice Lake sees lots of extra activity in summertime.

It's a wonderful thing, but it also brings about some challenges.

And those challenges include a few cleaning-related challenges such as:

  • Dirt on the floors

  • Bugs near the windows

  • Smells on furniture

  • Juice in the kitchen

  • More frequent showering

Let's go into a little more detail on the tips and tricks for dealing with these summer cleaning challenges.

Dirt on the Floors

Winter can bring more dirt into the house. But it seems that it's the summer when you're going in and out more often. The weather is great in Rice Lake. We can go in and out of the house several times a day. We're not just heading to work, coming home and staying in the house the rest of the time.

The key tip for dealing with more dirt and debris on the floor is to have a good vacuum. Preferably you want one that will spin when you're on carpet and rugs that you can flip off to suction only for hard surface flooring.

This will make it more likely that you'll use it frequently.

Nobody wants to be walking on crumbs with their bare feet in the summer. Vacuum instead of sweeping. It's the best tip for keeping your floors clean.

Bugs on the Windows

We do have bugs in Wisconsin in the summertime. It's not ideal, but we put up with it because it's well worth it.

There can be little gnats. There can be flies. Maybe a few spiders. The occasional bee. And those pesky beetles.

When you're vacuuming the floors just take the attachment off quick and suck those guys up as they line the windowsills.

When the summer is over give the windows a good cleaning inside and out including the screens.

Smells on the Furniture

We tend to sweat more in the summer. That usually leads to more sweat on the furniture.

Many people also like to leave the windows open in summer. And if you've ever seen a campfire in Wisconsin you know that the smoke tends to go where you don't want. And that includes inside the house.

Pets get hot too and they shed a lot in summer.

It all stays on the fabrics.

Make sure to vacuum your upholstered furniture regularly. Especially in the summer.

Juice in the Kitchen

We're cutting up vegetables and fruits in the summer.

We're drinking summer drinks and juices.

We're grilling chicken and brats.

We're doing all kinds of prep in the kitchen.

All that juice finds its way onto the counters and the nooks and crannies.

Make sure to regularly clean the kitchen surfaces.

Start by dusting high. Then use a good surface cleaner like Spic-N-Span and spray the surface you're going to clean. Take a good microfiber towel and give everything a good wipe making sure to get into all those tight corners.

Wipe all the crumbs to the floors.

Wipe the cabinet doors on your way down.

Then vacuum everything up. Make sure you get it all. Then mop the floors.

More Frequent Showering

People shower more in the summer.

That will take a toll on your showers and really the entire bathrooms.

Get yourself a good cleaner like Comet. Spray down the shower and use a non-abrasive pad to really scrub the shower good. You want to stay up to date on the soap scum and hard water that will accumulate over summer.

Really work on the floor in the shower too. That takes the biggest brunt of the summer showering.

Get a good grout brush and stay up to date on the tile grout cleaning as well.

Final Thoughts

Summer brings some amazing experiences.

But it also brings some challenges. Those include the upkeep on your home.

But hopefully the tips here can help you stay up to date on making sure your Rice Lake home is looking as good as ever.
