We have a lot of hard water in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.

It shows up in your toilets. It shows up in your sinks. Anywhere that water sits even for a little while will show various forms of hard water staining.

Showers and tubs are another area where hard water can show up.

But it's not just hard water...

Soap builds up. Oils build up. All kinds of stuff.

Nobody wants to clean up in a dirty shower or tub. But it's not always at the top of the list to really scrub the shower.

Here are a few steps for cleaning your shower and tub regularly so it doesn't get out of control.

Step 1. Spray With Cleaner and Disinfectant

Comet has a great product for showers and tubs.

It breaks down tough oils and soaps. It's also disinfects.

It's not the only one. You can find others. Whatever you use you want to spray down the entire shower and let it soak for a few minutes. Let the cleaner do its work on the crime and dirt.

Give it some time to disinfect.

You're looking at 5-10 minutes.

Spray it and work on cleaning the mirror and sink area.

Step 2. Scrub With A Non-Abrasive Pad

We suggest starting all cleaning with the least abrasive method first. Then work your way up depending on the situation.

You want to avoid as much potential damage as possible.

There isn't too much that can go wrong with bathroom and shower cleaning, but you still want to be careful.

There are some great non-abrasive pads on the market. These are like scour pads, but not even close to being as abrasive.

They're enough to scrub away dirt, soap scum and other grime from a shower, but they won't scratch the surface.

Step 3. Pumice Stones for Porcelain

Make SURE your tub is porcelain before reading this.

Pumice stones are great for really dirt toilets. Hard water. All the stuff.

They're also great for tubs, but you have to make sure the tub is porcelain or the stone will scratch and damage the tub.

We the stone and rub it over the really hard-to-clean areas. The hard water orange stains. The mildew spots. The stuck on soap scum.

Step 4. Tile & Grout

Tile showers look great, but often require a lot of upkeep.

Get yourself a good grout scrubber or brush. The bristles should be fairly stiff.

Every so often you're going to want to spray the grout with cleaner and disinfectant, like Comet. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then come back and scrub with the grout brush.

This keeps your grout looking just like it did when it was originally laid out.

Step 5. Touch Up Cleaning

A good last step, especially if your shower has little nooks and crannies is to take a tooth brush and scrub the little areas.

We're talking like the shelves where you keep your soaps and shampoos. Around the spigots and handles and nozzles.

A toothbrush also works well where the water comes out of these areas. We often don't look under the spout in tubs, but make sure to keep those areas clean because soap and hard water can build up and cause issues.

Final Thoughts

We all love getting into a really clean feeling shower. But we don't all love to do the work that comes with keeping a shower and tub clean.

Follow these tips and do it weekly or at least bi-weekly for the best results. A little regular upkeep will ensure that grime isn't building up. Then you'll have to put in more time and effort.
