Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and surrounding areas, usually have quite a bit of hard water. For toilets, and other similar items, that means hard water stains.
You might notice that you develop reddish stains in your toilet from time to time. This is from hard water.
Even if you have a water treatment system in place you may still experience these stains. The treatment systems usually need to be refreshed every few months and as the cycle comes to an end and needs replenishing you may see the hard water stains come back.
So what's the best method for cleaning your toilet?
Here are the steps:
Spray with disinfectant and sanitizer
Let sit
Wipe the surrounding areas from top to bottom
Clean inside of the toilet with a toilet brush
Use pumice stone as needed
1. Spray with Disinfectant and Sanitizer
The first step we always recommend when cleaning is to put on gloves. Usually nitrile gloves or those yellow latex gloves. But be careful because some are allergic to latex. The disposable nitrile gloves work well as long as you have ones of good strength such as 5 Mil or more.
Once your gloves are on spray the toilet inside and out with a disinfectant and sanitizer. Comet 3-20 is a great option. It provides disinfectant, sanitizer and deodorizer all in one.
2. Let Sit
After spraying, let the cleaning solution go to work.
You want to let the solution sit and disinfect for several minutes. Usually around 10 minutes will work great.
Take the time to clean other areas in the bathroom such as the sink and countertop or the mirrors.
3. Wipe Surrounding Areas
Start at the top of the toilet on the outside and work your way down. This way gravity will work in your favor. Any particles will fall down lower and the top will remain clean.
Microfiber is wonderful for cleaning the outside of the toilet. It absorbs particles and keeps a tight hold so you're not dropping too much on the floor or surrounding areas of the toilet.
Wipe the entire area of the toilet thoroughly.
We recommend removing the seat if you're able to. Many toilet seats today come with a quarter turn mechanism on each attachment bolt that makes it easy to remove the seat and clean in those harder to reach areas.
4. Clean Inside of Toilet
Once you're done on the inside take a toilet brush and scrub the inside. The cleaner will help with some of the hard water spots in the toilet. It depends on how long it's been since your last clean.
Scrub reasonable hard to clean as much as possible. If the hard water stains remain there are other options for cleaning that will work better.
5. Use Pumice Stone As Needed
Pumice stones are a great tool for cleaning hard water and mineral stains in toilets. You can get them at most home goods stores and even in most dollar stores. They are usually gray and can come in a few different shapes.
Wet the stone. Then begin by gently rubbing the stone up and down and side to side on the stained area inside the toilet.
Do this until the stain is no loner visible while continuing to keep the stone wet using the water in the toilet bowl.
If you regularly clean your toilet the pumice stone should work quickly. If you haven't cleaned in a while it make take a minute or so to remove the stain(s).
Rinse any remaining remnants of the pumice stone with the toilet brush and wet water from inside the bowl.
Then flush the toilet and spot clean as necessary.
Final Thoughts
Hard water stains in toilets can be frustrating. You probably don't want to look at them regularly and you probably don't want your guests seeing them either.
Regular cleaning will work wonders to keep the hard water off your toilet surface areas. But not everyone wants to clean their toilet every day or every few days.
Follow the steps above. The entire process takes about 12-15 minutes with most of that set aside for letting the disinfectant do its thing.
